In order to provide electricity to the rapidly developing chemical industry in the south of Kazakhstan, the construction of the Dzhambul GRES began in 1964, which was carried out in two stages. Taking into account the prospects for the development of large chemical enterprises of the Dzhambul and Chimkent industrial centers, at the first stage, the capacity of the first stage of the power plant was determined at 600 MW from three double units with a capacity of 200 MW each with direct-flow gas-oil boilers. The first unit was launched on November 6, 1967. On July 30, 1969, with the launch of the 3rd power unit, the construction of the first stage of the station was completed. In 1974, the construction of the second stage of the GRES began. It was equipped with three monoblocks with a capacity of 210 MW each. On December 30, 1976, after the start-up of the 6th unit, the construction of the second stage ended, and the power plant's capacity reached 1230 MW. Zhambyl GRES is the backbone of the energy base in the south of Kazakhstan. This is the first block-type power plant in the republic, one of the most powerful in the region.
